A Room with a View (but no pool) or Liar! Liar! Pants on Fire!

Great View From the 61st Floor

For our stay in Melbourne, we rented a one-bedroom apartment on the 61st floor in a high rise building through Airbnb with an expansive view. We had clear days and other days with thick haze from the Australian bush fires. At street level, it wasn’t as obvious, but we did notice a bit of a smoky smell.

Not Fog, Smoke from Bush Fires

The unit was nice enough; however, the description clearly says there is a pool and spa:

Nope. The following notice was on the door entry to the pool and spa area. The building concierge said the ceiling glass above the pool has fractures, is dangerous, and may crash to the floor.

Other messages up until this point were rapidly answered by our Airbnb host. The following message was not.

After 2 days, Angie responded by suggesting we could use a pool at a gym down the street and offered to reimburse the cost. We were not about to do that. And after we were there a couple of days, we really didn’t want to pack up and move, but felt that some accommodation should be made. At that point, we initiated a complaint with Airbnb. It took 5 days, but Airbnb worked with the host and refunded us $20 per day for our 9-day stay. We are big fans of Airbnb and their assistance resolving this situation demonstrated their commitment to customer service.
